BOARD AND COMMITEE SERVICE

Board and Committee Service

Homestead is a community-ownership organization and that makes our Board a little different in a great way.

Community ownership occurs when the community that benefits from assets (land, homes, cultural spaces) has democratic representation (voting) in the governance of our organization.  In our program households own their homes; the land under the homes is owned collectively through Homestead as a nonprofit membership organization. All homewners are voting members. Homestead’s board is accountable to the membership and the wider community.

A third of the seats on our Board of Delegates are held by homeowners in our program. This structure assures that homeowners have a vital voice in our governance, that we are accountable to the community and keep homeowner-members’ perspective at the forefront of our decision-making.

Expectations

  • Attend Homestead’s monthly board meetings (third Wednesdays at 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM )

  • Introduce Homestead to individuals with the capacity to support Homestead’s work financially.

  • Participate in Homestead’s advocacy, committee and fundraising work between monthly meetings

  • Place Homestead among their top philanthropic beneficiaries and make a meaningful personal gift each year.

Average time commitment of 4 to 6 hours per month. Members serve 3-year terms.

Board Committees

Most Board committees have a combined membership of Board members and community members. Committees support the work of Homestead with professional and technical expertise, and provide oversight and accountability to the Board as a whole.  We actively recruit for the following committees year 'round:

  • Real Estate Development

  • Finance

  • Events and Fundraising

  • Advocacy (Legislative)

  • Outreach

How Board Elections Work

Board members beginning a new term are elected in January at Homestead’s Annual meeting.

Interested applicants will submit their applications to the sitting Board of Delegates via the president or the Executive Director. From that group, the Board will nominate a slate of candidates for the membership to elect based on the skills needed on the board and the fit of the applications. All members present at the meeting vote to fill each open seat from the pool of available candidates for any given category.  A simple majority will suffice for election of new board members. Board members may be appointed to seats made vacant by resignations at any time during the calendar year. Appointed members complete the term of the individual who they replace on the Board.
